How to redact a PDF so the text is really gone
Every few months a court filing or a government report makes the news because the "redacted" names could be copied straight out of the PDF. The black bars were real, but the text was still underneath. Covering text is not the same as removing it. Here is the difference, and how to redact a document so nothing can be recovered.

Why a black box is not enough
A PDF keeps text and drawings in separate layers. When you draw a black rectangle in an editor, or highlight text in black, you add a shape on top. The text is still in the file: select the area and copy it, or open the file in another program, and the words come back. Some files also carry the author's name, earlier titles and other details in their metadata, which no box covers.
Redact a PDF step by step
- Open Redact PDF and add your document. Redact is part of Papermint Premium.
- Mark each area to remove by drawing a box over it, with the mouse or your finger. To remove a name or number everywhere it appears, type it under Find & mark text and select Mark all.
- Or run Smart Redact, which finds email addresses, card numbers, IBANs, phone numbers, ID numbers, dates and money amounts for you to review. Keep the suggestions you want, and add boxes for anything it missed.
- Apply the redactions and download the result.
What happens to the file
- Each page with a redaction is rebuilt as a flat image with the black bars burned in. The original page, with its text layer and anything hidden on it, is thrown away, not just covered.
- The document is rebuilt from scratch, so leftover copies of the old pages are not carried along inside the file.
- The title, author, subject and keywords are cleared from the document's metadata.
- Pages without redactions are left as they were, with their text intact.
Because redacted pages become images, their remaining text is no longer selectable. If those pages need to stay searchable, run OCR PDF on the redacted file afterwards: it recognises only what is still visible.
Check before you send
- Search the result for the names and numbers you removed. They should not be found.
- Try to select text under each black bar. There should be nothing to select.
- Scanned documents need OCR first if you want Smart Redact to find things, because it needs real text. You can always draw boxes by hand.
- Look at every page. Automatic detection helps, but you are the last check.
