How to use Redact PDF
Redact PDF removes sensitive content permanently. The marked areas are not just covered: the affected pages are rebuilt as flat images, so the hidden text is gone from the file. Premium.
- Upload the PDF and mark the areas to remove.
- Or run Smart Redact to find e-mail addresses, card numbers, IBANs, phone numbers, ID numbers, dates and money amounts, and review its suggestions.
- Apply and download the redacted document.
Good to know
- Never redact by drawing a black box in an editor: the text stays underneath and can be copied out.
- Redacted pages lose selectable text. Run OCR on the result if it must stay searchable.
- Smart Redact needs real text, so scanned documents need OCR first. You can still draw boxes by hand.
- Check the result before sending: you are the last line of defence.

Questions about Redact PDF
- Is Redact PDF free?
- No. Redact PDF is part of Premium and Business, along with bigger files and batches. The rest of Papermint's tools are free to use.
- Which files can I use?
- PDF files (.pdf). One file at a time.
- What happens to my files?
- They are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on Papermint's own servers and deleted automatically: after 2 hours if you are not signed in, or 24 hours if you are. "Delete now" on the result removes them straight away. Your documents are not read, shared or sent to other services.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No. Redact PDF runs in your browser on phones, tablets and computers, so there is nothing to download.
- Do I need an account?
- Yes: sign in with a Premium or Business account. You can cancel any time.
